Woman Dies in Mira Mesa Fire Two Others Escape

A woman died and two others were able to escape a fire at a home in Mira Mesa very early Monday morning.

A San Diego-Fire Rescue Department spokeswoman says firefighters responded around 2:30 a.m. to a home in the 10-thousand block of Westonhill Drive near the intersection of Mira Mesa Boulevard. Firefighters say when they arrived they could see flames and lots of smoke.

They say it appeared the fire started in one of the bedrooms in the back of the house and burned right through part of the roof. That's where the body of an elderly woman was found. Two other women were awakened by the smell of smoke and got out quickly.

San Diego Fire says there is no indication that any functioning smoke detectors were inside the residence.
