Teen Arrested After Doing a TikTok Challenge

Another TikTok challenge has landed another teen in trouble.

Police in Long Beach say a 13-year-old middle school student was arrested outside Perry Lindsey Academy on May 8th after participating in what's called the "Chromebook Challenge".

It's a new TikTok trend that encourages students to jam paperclips, pencil lead or any metal into the USB ports on their Chromebooks to short circuit them. Officials warn it's dangerous and could start a fire. In this case, only the Chromebook was damaged and there were no injuries.

A message to parents and guardians was sent by the school district urging them to "speak with their children about the dangers of participating in social-media challenges that promote unsafe or destructive behavior."

The Los Angeles Times reports incidents of smoking Chromebooks have been reported by school districts in Northern California, Connecticut, Colorado, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New Hampshire.
